Experiencing Deaf Culture Through Deaf Cinema

April 4 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Participants will learn about language deprivation and the cultural phenomenon of “the dinner table
syndrome,” the increased risk of mental health challenges that Deaf and hard of hearing people
face, and how these experiences manifest in Deaf Culture and how the Deaf community cope with
these challenges. Interpreters will be able to examine how they might see these issues manifest in
their interpreting jobs and how they can contribute to reduction of these barriers. These topics will
be explored through viewing and discussing three short films written and/or directed by Charlie
Ainsworth: Dinner Table Syndrome, Glass Cage, and The Deaf Do Not Beg.

Presenters: Charlie Ainsworth and Edward Bart
Mr. Ainsworth has been making films since 2018 in the Deaf and hearing communities. He has a BA in
Theater Arts and History from Gallaudet, and an MFA in screenwriting from the David Lynch Graduate
School of Cinematic Arts. He is the founder of the filmmaking company Angry Deaf People Production.

Dr. Bart has taught ASL and Deaf Culture classes for over 15 years. Currently, he serves as the director of
the BA in ASL at Wichita State University. He researches media representation of Deaf people and audism.
