Interp. WS: Is It Really My Job? And other Ethical Questions

September 7 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

Workshop/Course Description:
The definition of our job can be clear if we only look at the linguistics role that we serve.
However, without codes of conduct, professionalism, specific roles within context, soft skills,
problem solving, diffusionary tactics, and the ability to explain our job to others… our real and
complete job ends up a little hollow. In this workshop we will explore the reasons why and
resources to improve how we ethically determine what is ACTUALLY the full view of our
profession.
With a mix of lecture, group discussion, and small group case studies, participants will leave
feeling empowered to elevate their day-to-day work.

Educational Objectives
• Review laws and standard practices that affect an interpreter’s daily decisions outside of
the linguistic interpreting process.
• Learn and discuss soft skills that would ease many everyday work situations
• Discuss how to avoid hindering the goals of our work environments
• Learn how to ethically work with colleagues and agencies.
• Discuss real case studies and how we can ethically use what we’ve learned to address
possible approaches.

*The goal of the workshop is to look at difficult case studies in the last third of the workshop. Attendees
will use the laws reviewed, CPC standard practices, and an approach to soft skills/interpersonal skills to
ethically discuss all possible avenues for an interpreter to take, how that will affect all parties involved,
and all future interpreters entering into that situation.
