Workshop/Course Description:
This workshop will provide practical guidance on navigating the complexities of self-employment for
interpreters. Based on the book “The Interpreter’s Quick Guide to Self-Employment,” participants will gain
insights into taxes, business structures, bookkeeping, deductions, retirement planning, insurance, and
self-care.
Educational Objectives
Participants will be able to:
○ Identify key tax differences between employees and freelancers.
○ Compare and contrast various business structures for freelance interpreters.
○ Develop a basic understanding of bookkeeping principles and their application to freelance work.
○ Create a plan for tracking income and expenses for tax purposes.
○ Outline strategies for retirement savings as a self-employed interpreter.
○ Identify essential insurance coverage for freelance interpreters.
○ Develop self-care strategies to maintain work-life balance.
