Interpreting for folks with intellectual and developmental disabilities requires a variety of specialized skills. Understanding the varying perspectives both within and outside of the community is essential to doing your best interpreting work.

This session will take a deeper dive into the various tools that interpreters can employ when interpreting for people who have language fluency issues or idiosyncratic language that the interpreter may not be familiar with. The session will incorporate both didactic elements, as well as large and small group discussions. There will also be “hands up” practice opportunities.

Attendees should be prepared to be on camera and participate in discussions.

This training is appropriate for ASL-English interpreters. .15 PS CEUs provided through Pennsylvania Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf. Participants should have some prior content knowledge to attend.

At the completion of this training, the participant will be able to:

  • Define “high context language”,
  • Compare and contrast first person, third person, narrative, and descriptive interpreting approaches,
  • Describe the Collaborative Interpreting Model, and
  • Describe at least 3 tools an interpreter can use to augment their work.

About the presenter: Lori Milcic is a nationally certified ASL-English interpreter with a specialist certification in mental health interpreting (QMHI). She also holds a master’s degree in psychology and currently works as the Deaf Services Coordinator for ODP.
