Interpreting for folks with intellectual and developmental disabilities requires a variety of specialized skills. Understanding the varying perspectives both within and outside of the community is essential to doing your best work.

This session will take a deeper dive into the variety of ways sign language is used in the context of intellectual and developmental disabilities. This virtual, live, training session will focus on ASL vocabulary often used in the intellectual/developmental disability world and modifications that are commonly seen. Bring your own examples to share. The session will incorporate didactic elements, as well as large & small group discussions.

Attendees should be prepared to be on camera and participate in discussions.

This training is appropriate for ASL-English interpreters and students. 0.15 PS CEUs provided through Pennsylvania Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (PARID). Participants do not need prior content knowledge to attend.

At the completion of this training, the participant will be able to:

  • Compare & contrast the linguistic needs of Deaf professionals in the IDA system vs. Deaf individuals receiving support,
  • Describe the variety of signing skills used by DHHDB individuals in the IDA system, and
  • Identify 3 tools or approaches an interpreter can employ when working in the IDA world.
