SUMMARY:Movie Showings: Marlee Matlin "Not Alone Anymore"
DESCRIPTION:Join Us for an Inspiring Film Event! \nNext Friday\, July 11\, we’re excited to open Marlee Matlin: Not Alone Anymore at the Glenwood Arts Theatre in Overland Park\, KS. This powerful new documentary highlights Marlee Matlin’s groundbreaking journey as a Deaf actress and activist\, offering an emotional and uplifting look at her life\, career\, and impact. \nShowtimes (July 11–16):\n🕐 Daily (except Sunday) at 1:15 PM & 7:15 PM\n🕐 Sunday at 1:15 PM only \nPlease spread the word—like all of our films\, it will only continue to show based on ticket sales. Let’s help make this story seen and heard! \n  \n \n  \n  \nMarlee Matlin was born into a hearing family\, like roughly 95% of Deaf people. Growing up in Illinois\, she faced episodes of isolation and abuse. She found joy in performing at a local deaf theater. In 1987\, Marlee Matlin became the first Deaf actor to win an Academy Award and was thrust into the spotlight at 21 years old. Reflecting on her life in her primary language of American Sign Language\, NOT ALONE ANYMORE explores the complexities of what it means to be a trailblazer. As a child\, filmmaker Shoshannah Stern was inspired to believe that a deaf woman like herself could pursue a career as an actor after seeing Matlin win her Oscar. Stern’s directorial debut is an intimate\, honest\, and loving conversation between two profoundly connected people that weaves together Matlin’s first-person account with interviews from those who know her best.

SUMMARY:These Hands: New & Emerging Interpreters In-Person Meeting (KC)
DESCRIPTION:Affinity Group: New and Emerging Interpreters \nThe journey of a new interpreter is filled with both excitement and challenges. This affinity group offers a supportive environment for those who are new to the field or are in the early stages of their careers. It’s a place to gain valuable insights\, receive peer mentorship\, and build a professional network. Members can share their experiences\, ask questions\, and learn from the expertise of more seasoned interpreters during guest speaker nights. This group aims to lessen the feelings of isolation that can come with being new to a profession\, and help foster a stronger sense of professional identity. It provides a space to discuss ethical dilemmas\, and get advice on how to grow within the field.  Meetings are conducted in Spoken English. \nIf not already a member and interested in more information\, contact: thesehands@strideinterpreting.com
